Making of

All the stones and moss are from our own beach and farm on Emäsalo island in Porvoo. I spent countless hours with the children on the beach and I took the opportunity to look for suitable stones.

First I needed to find a glue that was strong enough. I found Tremco PL400, which can hold stones of different sizes together. When it ran out, I couldn’t find it in any hardware store anymore, so I switched to Pattex No More Nails. Both were inexpensive and held the stones together much better than most glues. The disadvantage has been that they dry very slowly. In practice, I have been able to glue, for example, just one arm and then had to wait a day for it to dry before I could glue the other arm. So the process of repairing a stone roller has been long, but I have glued several stone rollers in the same day. Sometimes a week has passed without me gluing anything at all. I am in no hurry at all.

The hair has been fresh moss that I glued on with the same mass that I glued the stones together with. That has been the most clumsy stage – pressing the moss with my finger into a clump of sticky mass.

I bought the eyes from a regular craft store. They are the kind that cannot be glued on directly. They don’t hold on the uneven surface of the stone. I glued the eyes on with contact glue. I also used that glue to strengthen the attachment of the hair.
